Steve Farrow was born in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire in 1946 into a
family with a strong seafaring background that inspired his interest
in the sea and ships. In the school holidays he would sail on trawlers
as a “pleasure tripper” whenever the opportunity arose.
He went on to the nautical school in Grimsby and from there into the
Merchant Navy as a cadet, deck apprentice. Then he spent seventeen
years with Associated British Ports, spending most of this time working
on the dredgers in the Humber Ports.
It was during this period that Steve started to sketch and paint the
ships that were all around. His early attempts were with oils but
he quickly changed to water colour, a medium that is more suited to
his style of painting.
About this time he began to receive commissions for trawlers, first
of Grimsby vessels then from Hull and other ports.
So began the journey of being a ship portrait painter. All of the
trawlers have long since gone now, so all his work is done from good
photographs for accuracy of detail. Collecting photographs of these
ships has become an important task over the years but an interesting
one.
Although fishing vessels are the mainstay of his work, he does paint
most other types of shipping.
A selection of A4 prints are available double
mounted and wrapped. Details of these and originals on request.
